Well this one married well, she thought. But when he died she was left with property - a house to live in, another to rent out and more besides. Not enough to occupy a woman who had loved the limelight and delighted in shocking. Maria was proud of the fact that she had been the first to use the C word – well her agent was. Wanted her to make a come back, fill her empty life.
There is another C word that dogged Maria’s life. Brought up a Catholic, guilt was never far from her thoughts. Now, being a foul-mouthed stand-up comic wasn’t going to sit easy with the beliefs of the Chapel of the Holy Pentecostal Fire. The Church, the people of the church, were her friends. They supported her in a way that the relics of saints or touching a statue of Virgin Mary never had. And they wanted her to experience the Rapture and the Ecstasy that would come from letting Jesus fully in to her life.
