Nothing funny about death.

Characters

Maria Peters' story
- No-one believed that messages were left for me. Let me tell you, those peacock feathers in my house were real enough. So was the shoe-box in the shadows in the corner.

Lee Arnold's story
- I just want to do enough to get by. Me and Chronus, we’re OK. This woman, I don’t think she’s screwy but who can tell these days. Mumbo-jumbo religion doesn’t do it for me, surprised it does anything for her.

Mumtaz Hakim's story
- I felt sorry for Maria Peters. A woman on her own in a big house, jumping at the slightest sound, frightening herself half to death, convinced that someone is after her. Always taking something to calm her nerves.

DI Violet Collins' story
- This job is no place for people with relationships. Had a one-night stand with him once. It was alright. Did the job. Still quite fancy him.

Roy Arnold's story
- Yes, I like a drink. Perhaps a bit too much, but he is so po-faced about it. Me living with Mum works for the two of us. Really works for me.

Betty Muller's story
- She was my best friend… We were inseparable. Now I want her to experience the joy of the Lord.
