Jack Barak's story
- It was strange working for Master Shardlake. Always very proper until he wanted me to pick a lock or undo a manacle. Tamsin always had a care for him so he must be alright.
Mathew Shardlake's story
- What a fuss. Stand this way. Don’t look up to the King unless he talks to you. And all stand in a line and don’t move. Then I’m told to make sure I have a good shave. If its like this for a lawyer what must it feel like to the commoners.
Tamasin Reedbourne's story
- I can’t help it if I liked the look of him from the start. What’s a girl supposed to do? I didn’t mean no harm by it.
Giles Wrenne's story
- Despite the King’s enthusiasm for reform I cleave to my old religion. I take no pleasure in seeing the Councillors of York having to abase themselves in front of Henry.
Sir William Maleverer's story
- I shall make sure the barbarian papists feel the power and glory of their king. If only Shardlake had kept out of it, then the glazier’s secrets would have stayed that way. Everything else is just as it should be – no political upsets.
