In Sweden the summer is burning hot and most have fled the cities for respite. So hot the forest fires defy all the efforts of the fire-fighters. In the provincial town of Linkoping a young girl has been left dumped in the Horticultural Society Park. Naked, mutilated and her body cleansed with bleach. Unable to speak, unable to even say her name. And the odds are that she has been violated as well…that any vestige of innocence has been lost.
Detective Inspector Malin Fors was halfway through her eighty lengths of the twenty-five metre pool when she stops to answer her phone. It’s eight in the morning and swimming is one way for this thirty four year old to stay fit and stave of the effects of the night before. A night spent home alone, without her daughter who has gone on holiday with her ex-husband - the exotic trip a prize for his heroism as a fire-fighter. Malin knows this incessant summer heat can bring out the worst in man as well – none of which will help her deal with this case.
